Gunpowder magic, steam-power, adventure, and intrigue...

Carrtog, landless third son of Tsingallik and warrior trained in the use of powder magic, intends to make his way as a mercenary for hire. On his travels north, he and his personal guardsman stumble upon the royal christening of an expansion to Cragmor’s burgeoning railway –– in this case a gift from the King as a sign of goodwill to the conquered north of old. When the gathered populace prove they are not there to be pacified, Carrtog isn’t about to standby and do nothing. Cloaks sweep back, swords and pistols are drawn. Luckily for Carrtog, charging in might be his best chance of earning a name. But then the trap springs around the royal party and Carrtog realizes his eagerness may lead to his demise.

Worse, if he manages to survive the ensorcelled contraption and rescue the King from the depths of the rebellious north, he might find that holding the King’s favor could prove more dangerous than any duel against a combat magician in the haze of battlefield smoke. He’ll need more than a little wit and inventiveness to survive this uprising.

Steam engines, railway lines, gunpowder magic, and the advent of flight merge this flintlock fantasy adventure with the well tested machinations of steampunk –– a true confluence of invention and rebellion.

On the surface Railroad Rising: The Black Powder Rebellion seems like it could be a lot of fun. Part fantasy, part adventure, part steampunk, magic, even a touch of romance. What's not to like?

There were a number of things I enjoyed in this work. For example, the story is solid. A magician, named Cartogg, and his armsman come to the aid of the king when he is ambushed at the opening of a railway he has had built for his people. Cartogg proves himself worthy and is soon in the service of the king.

It's a good thing the king has Cartogg, since the rebels have magicians of their own. Aside from magic, the magician also shows an aptitude for steam engines and gliders and soon incorporates both into the king's arsenal.

My biggest problems with Railroad Rising: The Black Powder Rebellion was its repetitiveness. Again and again, throughout the story, Cartogg is worried that he will lose favor with the king and the possible consequences of such an occurrence. I can understand his feelings, but not the author's need to remind us incessantly.

The writing is capable, but I found the storytelling to be lackluster. What strengths there were in this book were found in the relationships between the characters. In the end, I'm glad I read Railroad Rising: The Black Powder Rebellion, but if there is a sequel I don't think I'd be likely to go there.

Railroad Rising The Black Powder Rebellion edition by J P Wagner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Great book about magic and steampunk. Entertaining and enjoyable.
Reading this book I was taken on a fast paced adventure full of action, explosions and steam. Loved it.
I received an advance copy of Railroad Rising from Hades Publishing as part of the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program. The book had an extremely busy plot following the life of Lord Carrtog through his rescue of the king during a failed abduction attempt and further adventures in lordship, marriage, magic, and artificing.
Overall, I was a bit disappointed with the book. Character development and worldbuilding was limited or nonexistent. Many of Carrtog's experiences involved the use of magic, but little or no explanation of how the magic worked was provided (the magic-user uses a fancily-named spell that is somehow enhanced by gunpowder to produce an effect). On multiple occasions, Lord Carrtog uses magic in battle or attempts to understand an enemy spell, but details are thoroughly glossed over.
I appreciated the opportunity to read the book provided by Hades Publishing, but without this opportunity, I probably would not have made it past the first few pages of the sample.
This was a fast read and the fantasy and slight steam punk elements kept it interesting enough to continue. There were a couple of downsides. Some scenarios get repetitive, both from the trial and error of developing new machines as well as some characters who seem capable of only one type of behavior. I would also have liked to see more context for some events mentioned only in passing, such as prior wars, to better explain the actions of some of the present-day characters. Overall, a nice and fast escape.
A sparkling adventure with magic, imaginative inventions and old fashioned chivalry and romance. Lord Carrtog saves the king’s daughter, is married off to her lady in waiting as a reward and is tasked to save the railroad. Therein lies the challenge and at the same time avoid falling into disfavor by a very paranoid and fickle king. The characters are well formed and tension and mystery are in all the right places. This is a good read for the holidays.d

I received an electronic copy in return for an honest review.
I don't read much fantasy, but this novel promised and delivered a world wherein magic and technology coexist and reinforce one another, for example, firing a pistol or rifle provides energy for some magic spells, and the protagonist uses a mixture of technology and magic to creat viable gliders. The characters were not well-developed, imo, but the world is interesting and well conceived, the action is almost non-stop, and the title is a play on words. Great read!
Carrtog is the third son of a Lord, so there is no chance he will inherit. He decides to hire out as a mercenary. He has some knowledge of magic, a friend that is teaching him common sense and how to fight, and a good horse. Of course, he has to be careful about politics. They can kill him, too.

Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing allowed me to read this book for review (thank you). You can get a copy on now.

I wasn't sure about this book, but it had gunpowder magic, steam power, a touch of romance, and great characters in it. Once I began reading it, all my doubts went away. This is a great adventure with the enemy having magic and a campaign against the king.

Carrtog rescues the King simply because he was there when they tried to kidnap him. He then gets pressed into service. Carrtog is young, though. He manages to anger the King before they get back to the castle. He also finds the Princess' lady in waiting very attractive. That's not a good thing, either. Mercenaries don't have wives.

As his reward for saving the King, he's appointed as a Lord. He's also given the lady in waiting in marriage. That's all well and fine, but then the King starts giving him impossible assignments waiting for him to fail. The King knows he failed on his mission in the past and Carrtog is a reminder. Carrtog is in a catch-22 situation.

It's a busy story with lots of action and it was a great read. If you like sci-fi, you should read this.
